This month Monkey
Town features Live Video artists as well as 4-screen installations.
Bob Stein (founder of Voyager and the Criterion Collection) and Monkey Town
have curated 4 nights of experimental
video work including artists from San Francisco, London, Berlin, Pittsburgh,
and NYC.
This is our first program featuring Video as Live Performance. A combination
of the live performances on
four screens and the intimacy of the space made for a wild and entirely new
visual environment.

ICH TANK , David
Larcher, 25 min. (Durchblick Version 2001, edited for four screens 2004)
Ich Tank is a Fish Tank built out of heavy Lacanian material.
"Hence the German title which refers to das ich, the ego, thus I, conceived
of as an
aquarium one gazes, glances, looks, views (blick) through. In the english
rendering it refers homophonically to the
eye and is intended to draw the attention to the latter's formative role in
the constitution of the notion of self.
The glassy stare reflecting the containing transparency of a fisch vision
through its aquarium/bowl.
The fisheye (ich/I) which converts the rectangle of the frame into a circle
in the process of seeing more. The word
ichtian, pertaining in English to fish, the I CH ing, etc, emphasised something
I didn't know. The wall seemed to act
like a psychic fish tank. Wherever I went I was seeing isch, everything was
ichthyoid. Eventually I got myself an ich....
This then is the origin of the tape, it centers around interpretations of
the ichtian act based on a series of happy and
sometimes exhausting misreadings." (D.L.)

MOSTRA (Gabriela MOnroy + Caspar STRAcke) live video, approx. 20 min.
"mapping and connecting: NY/DF/B"
A vector is a line of fixed length but not of fixed position. A vector
might be the potential to connect one thing to another, a particular
relation, but with no specified coordinates.
Space shifts, contracts and collapses
in this piece, while
images and maps of Manhattan, México City and Berlin blend into each
other.
The image sequences were customized to fit Monkeytown's four wall screen
formation.
The set includes 360° panorama shoots, satellite pictures, aerial views,
cityscapes
and surveillance images. The set is performed like a ping-pong match - arguments,
bouncing back and forth, a video-dialogue about issues on security, national
borders,
surveillance and urban living conditions.
